Giant Panda
Though technically a carnivore, over 99% of its diet is bamboo
Conservation Status: VULNERABLE
The literal translation of the Chinese characters which make up the word Giant Panda is “bear cat”
There are two subspecies of giant panda - The ones from Sichuan (black and white) and the ones from the Qinling Mountains (brown and white)
Its bite has the equivalent force of 259 pounds
The giant panda has one thumb and six fingers. The last finger is the smallest and is helpful when holding bamboo
The giant panda typically lives 20 years in the wild and 30 in captivity
Giant pandas are generally solitary
Pandas do not create permanent dens and do not hibernate
Currently pandas can be found at the National Zoo in Washington DC, Zoo Atlanta, and Memphis Zoo
